16.07.2014: The Beckman Report on Database Research

In October 2013, Prof. Markl was a member of a group of database researchers and invited speakers that met at the Beckman Center on the UC-Irvine campus to discuss the state of the database research field and its impacts on practice. This was the eighth meeting of this sort in 25 years, and was distinguished by a broad consensus that Big Data has now become a defining challenge of our time, and that the database research community is uniquely positioned to address it, with enormous opportunities to make transformative impact.
